# Quarantine & Biosecurity: a 30–42-day, no-nonsense plan
## Before Day 0: set up the quarantine (QT) station
- **Location:** Ideally a **separate room** from your established tanks; if that’s impossible, keep the QT as far away as you can, with splashing and aerosols minimized. Use its **own tools** (net, tub, siphon, thermometer). [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/quarantine.shtml?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Container:** Bare-bottom tub or tank, easy to clean, with a hide, floating tub/cave for shade, and a **sponge filter** or gentle air stone. Keep temperature stable **\~16–18 °C** (axolotl-friendly, stress-low). LafeberVet’s axolotl sheet explicitly recommends a **separate quarantine aquarium** for new arrivals. [Lafeber](https://lafeber.com/vet/care-of-the-axolotl/?srsltid=AfmBOoqAr96xijljsS0Czhp3u-tPgbWxl4AvsZKmctTT8AbPMFq01Ejw&utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Water:** Fully dechlorinated, cycled seed sponge if you have one. Aim for **NH₃/NH₄⁺ and NO₂⁻ = 0 mg/L**; keep **NO₃⁻ < 40 mg/L**. (General husbandry ranges consolidated in vet handouts.) [Lafeber](https://lafeber.com/vet/care-of-the-axolotl/?srsltid=AfmBOoqAr96xijljsS0Czhp3u-tPgbWxl4AvsZKmctTT8AbPMFq01Ejw&utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Disinfectant station:** A small bin for **1 % Virkon® S** (2–5 min contact), or a **1.6 % bleach** working solution (5 min contact). Rinse thoroughly and air-dry tools after disinfection; mix fresh solution regularly. **Keep chemicals away from aquaria; never add to the tank.** [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
> Why 30–42 days? Zoo and academic husbandry references recommend **≥ 30 days**, with many preferring **\~60 days** when feasible. For home keepers, **30–42 days** is a realistic sweet spot if daily checks stay clean. ## Day 0 (arrival)
1. **Acclimate quietly** (temperature match), then place the axolotl into QT. Do not share water or tools with your main system. [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/quarantine.shtml?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
2. **Baseline photos & notes:** body condition, gills, skin, limbs, tail, appetite (offer small earthworm/red-wriggler piece). LafeberVet recommends monitoring in QT specifically for eating, moving, breathing, and defecation. [Lafeber](https://lafeber.com/vet/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Axolotl-Care-of-the-040821.pdf?srsltid=AfmBOooHKP6PqKOSZu08DQRWIFmbUIXQiwrldihSnLcGND2kfyGBgiJL&utm_source=chatgpt.com)
3. **Label tools** “QT ONLY”. Disposable **nitrile gloves** are smart; change between tanks. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
---
## Days 1–14 (stabilise & watch like a hawk)
Daily routine (5–10 min):
- **Observe:** appetite, buoyancy, skin/mucus, gills, feces. Log anything off-normal. [Lafeber](https://lafeber.com/vet/care-of-the-axolotl/?srsltid=AfmBOoqAr96xijljsS0Czhp3u-tPgbWxl4AvsZKmctTT8AbPMFq01Ejw&utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Spot-clean** waste with a QT-only turkey baster.
- **Water:** small top-ups, keep temp **16–18 °C** and flow gentle.
- **Hygiene:** After you’re done, **disinfect tools** (1 % Virkon S for 2–5 min or 1.6 % bleach for 5 min), rinse, and air-dry away from aquaria. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
- **Wastewater:** Tip to sewer, not garden; where practical, treat waste water with bleach in an amphibian-safe manner before disposal. [Speak CDN](https://assets.speakcdn.com/assets/2332/amphibianhusbandryresourceguide.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
---
## Days 15–30 (the “quiet” period where hidden issues show)
- Keep the same daily checks. Any lethargy, inappetence, skin lesions, shedding, red patches, or abnormal feces? **Reset the quarantine clock** and consult an experienced exotics vet. (The goal is sustained normal.) [Lafeber](https://lafeber.com/vet/care-of-the-axolotl/?srsltid=AfmBOoqAr96xijljsS0Czhp3u-tPgbWxl4AvsZKmctTT8AbPMFq01Ejw&utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- No cross-use of nets, siphons, buckets. If you absolutely must, disinfect with **1 % Virkon S** (preferred on metals/fabrics) or **bleach 1.6 %** with **5 min** contact then rinse and dry fully. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
---
## Days 30–42 (clearance window)
- If **all observations remain normal** for the last **14 days** (no signs, eating consistently, normal feces), you can plan integration. Many keepers and moderators on Caudata.org advise **30–60 days** total isolation—err to the longer end if the axolotl was shipped, stressed, or from unknown history. [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/threads/quarantine.20180/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Final deep-clean of QT tools**; keep them as a dedicated backup set to avoid future cross-contamination. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
---
## Integration checklist (pass/fail)
Only integrate when **all** are true for at least **14 consecutive days**:
- Eats normally; no weight loss or floating episodes.
- Skin and gills look normal; no lesions or cottony tufts.
- Normal feces; no diarrhoea; zero odd mucus.
- No abnormal behaviour under gentle light/flow.\
If anything fails, **continue QT** and investigate. (This conservative stance mirrors zoo guidance and experienced hobby practice.) [Speak CDN+1](https://assets.speakcdn.com/assets/2332/amphibianhusbandryresourceguide.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

## Biosecurity details that actually matter
- **Physical separation > everything:** separate room best; aerosols and splash can move pathogens. Keep lids low-splash and airlines gentle. [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/quarantine.shtml?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Sequence of care:** Always service **main tanks first**, **quarantine last**; then wash hands/forearms and change gloves. [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/threads/quarantine.20180/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Plant & décor quarantine:** Even plants and hardscape can carry pathogens—quarantine and/or disinfect separately; many hobbyists hold plants for **\~30 days** before introducing. [Caudata](https://www.caudata.org/threads/plant-quarantine.33272/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- **Effective disinfectants (for tools/surfaces, never the tank):**
- **Virkon® S 1 %** (2–5 min contact). Gentler on metals/fabrics; proven against Bd/Bsal/ranavirus. Rinse well. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
- **Bleach 1.6 %** working solution (5 min contact) for robust gear; rinse and air-dry thoroughly. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
- **70 % ethanol** for delicate items (≥ 1 min contact), then air-dry—keep far from flames. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
- **Legal/regulatory context:** Bsal has driven stricter salamander biosecurity internationally; hobby standards exist for quarantine and clean handling to reduce spread. [ornamentalfish.org+1](https://ornamentalfish.org/what-we-do/set-standards/biosecurity/caudata-rules/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
---
## Simple daily log (copy this)
- **Date / Temp (°C) / Feed (type & amount) / Behaviour** (normal/notes)
- **Skin & gills** (clear/notes) **Feces** (normal/notes)
- **Water change** (%), **Parameter spot-check** as needed
- **Tool disinfection** (Virkon/bleach ✅)
---
##
- **30–42 days** of **true isolation** with its **own tools** and consistent observation stops almost every preventable headache. [Speak CDN+1](https://assets.speakcdn.com/assets/2332/amphibianhusbandryresourceguide.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
- Disinfect tools **every session** (Virkon S 1 % for 2–5 min, or bleach 1.6 % for 5 min), rinse, air-dry. [Northeast PARC](https://northeastparc.org/docs/NEPARC-Field-Equipment-Disinfection-Protocol.pdf)
- If signs appear, **reset the clock** and troubleshoot before risking your main tank. Vet-authored care sheets back the “quarantine first” rule for axolotls.
