Axolotl Tubbing — Clean, Calm, Temporary Care

Short-term, clean, and calm care during cycling, illness, or isolation. Keep water cool, stable, and 100% renewed daily. No clutter — just control and consistency.

Quick Stats

Metric first, hobby conversions in parentheses

Container
5.7–11.4 L (6–12 qt)
Temperature
16–18 °C (comfort 15–20 °C)
Water Depth
~5–10 cm or use a lid
Water Change
100% / 24 h more if soiled

Good to Know

Reduce stress, prevent escapes

  • Use food-grade plastic tubs; label them for axolotl use only.
  • Dechlorinate tap water (chlorine/chloramine) or use spring water.
  • Keep tubs away from sun, vents, and heaters — steady temps win.
  • Axolotls can jump; either keep water shallow or cover the tub.

Optional Add-Ons

Nice, not mandatory

  • Simple hide (PVC elbow or smooth aquarium cave).
  • Gentle air-stone to aid oxygenation and break surface film.
  • Second tub (“dual-tub swap”) for quick daily changes.

Setup Checklist

Clean, cool, controlled

  • Prep water: condition tap water to neutralize chlorine/chloramine.
  • Match temperature: keep new water within ~1–2 °C of current.
  • Depth or lid: ~5–10 cm depth or use a fitted cover.
  • Comfort: add a small hide; avoid sharp décor.
Stability over gadgets: consistent temperature + complete daily renewals do most of the work.
Dual-tub swap (fast 100% change)
  1. Keep two tubs ready with conditioned water in the same room.
  2. Feed first; then gently move the axolotl (wet hands/soft net) to the fresh tub.
  3. Empty, hot-water rinse (no soap), refill, and re-condition the vacated tub for tomorrow.

Daily Care & Monitoring

Simple routine, zero mystery

  • Change 100% daily; sooner if there’s waste or leftover food.
  • Watch stress signs: persistent floating, curled gills, refusing food, lethargy.
  • Handle gently: wet hands to protect the slime coat; support the body.
  • One per tub: prevents nips and territorial stress.
Feeding while tubbing
Offer usual safe foods. Feed just before your water change, then move to fresh water so nothing lingers.
Quick safety rules
  • No soaps/chemicals on tubs or your hands.
  • Don’t “chase” temperature with ice baths; aim for steady 16–18 °C.
  • Label nets/tubs to avoid cross-contamination with other aquaria.

Return to the Main Tank

End-goal: a fully cycled, stable aquarium

  • Tub while the display is cycling, recovering from a crash, or the axolotl is ill/injured.
  • When ammonia and nitrite are consistently zero (with appropriate filtration) and temperature is stable, transition back.
Why this works: small, controlled volume + complete daily renewals keep ammonia/nitrite near zero. Cool, steady water reduces stress so the animal can heal. Then it’s back to a stable, cycled tank.
